Is there a basic set of rules for riding Critical Mass? There should be some instruction given out to the cyclist. There seems to be a lack of leadership at CM rides in DC. Other cities assign road crossing guards and work with police prior and during the event.

For Example Some Rules Should Be:

- When encricling cars, cyclists should never touch the vehicle at any time. Protests by cyclists should be demonstrated by noise makers, clapping, laughter, etc…

- Cyclists should always stay in the legal traffic lanes in the direction of travel. Cyclists should not drift into on-coming traffic.

The purpose of this weekend is to raise some dollars, yes, but it also a weekend to raise awarness and support for D.C.’s only community bicycle shop. Chain Reaction Bike Shop educates youth about the role of the bicycle in sustainable communities, equips youth with job skills, and provides residents of Washington, DC, with safe, affordable, and pollution-free transportation.

The Youth Bike Shop, an entrepreneurial venture of Chain Reaction, hires youth mechanics to recycle donated bikes for resale and complete repairs for customers. All revenue generated supports educational workshops and the work of the youth mechanics.

Plus, you’ll also be hearing about the Women’s Garden Cycles Bike Tour. Three women are biking from D.C. to Montreal this summer/fall to document local alternatives to the industrial agricultural model - with dozens of stops along the way at urban community gardens, rural local foods movements, CSA farms, co-ops and projects in appropriate technology, etc. Our aim to connect such innovative projects along the east coast through thorough audio and visual documentation and a website… You’ll hear more about it if you come to these events!

So please, invite everyone and anyone and if you want to be involved with music, art, food, interpretive bicycle dancing number…let me know! EMAIL US - gardencycles@gmail.com
and we’ll coordinate art drop offs and musical numbers!

Thank you and look forward to seeing you all!

I’d like to take a little video of CM DC sometime at one of the first Friday rides. Would this pose a problem for anyone? I intend to use it to eventually in making a video for a song (”Bicycle Song”) by a band (”Nozebone the Band”) which ceased to exist years ago. There’s not much chance this video would be widely seen. Just thought I’d ask if this was okay.

Saturday, demanding respect from motorists and protesting against the
car-oriented culture in this megalopolis.

This would be my first time attending the ride. I have invited a friend to ride with me and it would her first time too. Can anyone give me an idea of what it is like and what should I expect to see and where will we be riding and for how long on the Jan 6th Critical Mass DC ride!?

Critical Massers,

Welcome to the new unofficial Critical Mass DC website powered by Wordpress blogware. We’ve gotten most of the kinks worked out and are now inviting everyone to register. You can then write new posts by accessing the adiministration screens, also found at the bottom of the homepage (click on write/write post, once you’re in).

So have a look around, drop some comments, make it your own.

See you on the streets,

Pooty T
